Happy Birthday, Boh!

As we recently marked the birthday of Bohumil "Boh" Makovsky, we celebrate the talented musician and educator who played a pivotal role in founding Kappa Kappa Psi. Born on September 23, 1878, Boh became the band director at Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) in 1915. His emphasis on discipline, musicianship, and camaraderie fostered a sense of pride and unity among his students. Inspired by his leadership, a group of 10 students, led by William A. Scroggs, proposed the idea of forming a fraternity dedicated to the advancement of college band programs. Boh supported their vision, offering his wisdom and guidance to it's creation.

On November 27, 1919, Kappa Kappa Psi was officially founded, with Bohumil Makovsky named the fraternity's first honorary member. Often referred to as the "Guiding Spirit" of Kappa Kappa Psi, Boh's influence goes far beyond its founding. His belief in the values of musicianship, leadership, service, and brotherhood became the core of the fraternity's mission, inspiring generations of members to strive for the highest. Today, his legacy lives on in the thousands of Kappa Kappa Psi members across the country who continue to serve their college bands and communities with the same passion and dedication that Boh instilled in his students over a century ago.

Happy Birthday, Bohumil Makovsky, the Guiding Spirit of Kappa Kappa Psi!
