The Scott Stowell Alumni Excellence Award recognized the continued dedication and service to Kappa Kappa Psi by alumni brothers who are neither elected nor appointed members of the Fraternity’s National Leadership.  The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association seeks to recognize unsung heroes who exemplify the honor of service within our Fraternity through their devotion of time, energy, and spirit while volunteering as advisors, mentors, and role models, their professional advice and networking support to other members of our Fraternity, and their encouragement of active Brothers toward greater participation and growth in band programs and as members of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Nominee:
A nominee must have been initiated into Kappa Kappa Psi as a brother. Membership status can be checked by contacting Kappa Kappa Psi National Headquarters by phone at 405-372-2333 or via email at hqacc@kkytbs.org, or by visiting OPUS. A nominee must be a voting member of the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association. They cannot be a current member of any part of the National Leadership Team or an employee of the fraternity. A nominee must have last held Active, Associate, or Conditional status in the Fraternity at least five years prior to May 15th of the National Convention year in which they are to be recognized. Previous members of the National Leadership Team or employees of the Fraternity are ineligible for two years after they last held such a position.  The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors has authority to allow for discretion involving certain instances where questions regarding dates may arise.

Nominator:
Nominations for this award may be made by active chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma, Local Alumni Associations (“LAAs”) of Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma, individual alumni and life members of Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma, any member of the National Headquarters Staff, the National Leadership Team, or any voting member of the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association. The nominator(s) will be responsible for writing a letter of recommendation for the nominee, obtaining any additional references for the nomination, and submitting all required documentation for the nomination. The nomination should substantiate the defined award criteria for the nominee and include the nominator’s and any additional references’ letters of recommendation. The nominator will be the main contact person for the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors’ designee. If the nomination is coming from a group, such as a chapter, a single point of contact should be appointed.

Additional References:
Any additional references for the nomination will be provided in the nominator's letter of recommendation that substantiates the defined award criteria for the nominee. (The nominator will submit these letters of recommendation with the nomination). The additional references should be people who can attest to the quality of the nominee’s fraternal service. Examples of individuals who could be additional references include, but are not limited to, a Director of Bands, Sponsor, or any individual who has worked with the nominee on a Local, District, or National Level. Please limit the number of letters to five (5).  The quality of the letter(s) will be weighed more than the quantity.

Letters of Recommendation:

  1. The letters of recommendation accompanying the nomination must include the nominator’s and additional references’ contact information and explanations regarding how they know the nominee.

  2. These letters should include as much information as possible regarding the nominee in order to help the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Awards Committee as it considers each nominee.

  3. These letters should cover the following topics, taking into consideration and mentioning, where appropriate, attendance at fraternity events, different roles held, any informal support, and any other pertinent information regarding the nominee’s fraternal service (at the local, district, and/or national levels):

    • How does the nominee continue to serve and support the fraternity as an alumnus?

    • How does the nominee support and strengthen the role of alumni?

    • How does the nominee take the values of Kappa Kappa Psi to heart?

    • How does the nominee fit the “What can I do for you?” state of mind?

    • How do you envision the nominee’s involvement 5 years from now?

Nomination Process:

All nominations must be submitted to the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors’ designee through the online form available below.  A nomination can be submitted at any time, but no later than May 15th of a National Convention year. It is strongly suggested that nominees remain unaware of their nominations until and unless they actually receive the award in case they are not selected for the award or there is any issue that prevents such recognition. In such a situation, the nominator will be notified by the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors’ designee of any issues with the nomination and will be counseled regarding a suggested course of action.

Recognition Process:
After reviewing all nominations, the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Awards Committee will recommend one nominee to the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors to receive this award. If the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors approves the recognition of the selected nominee through this award, the nominator will be informed of that decision. (However, the award recipient will not be notified at that time.)  The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Board of Directors will use their discretion to select the presentation event and award presenter. The award recipient will receive a framed certificate and a lapel pin designed particularly for recipients of this award. The award recipient will also be commemorated in appropriate fraternity records.
